 -- The Way Home --

John Herlihy

 

Every day brings me a step closer,

To finding on my own the way home.

I hear drumbeats beating a steady rhythm,

Or the low, solo notes of a distant piano.

Some inner music follows me pianissimo,

Melodies I never thought I could ever know.

The cords they are a-sounding on my heart,

Deep and vibratory, felt right from the start.

A stranger somehow turns into a familiar face,

Then I am lost again roaming in some alien place.

Hopes rise like suns over the horizon it seems,

The day ends, the sun sets, and so do my dreams.

The unknown stretches before but what do I seek,

Nothing at all but what rightfully is mine to meet.

Oceanic the feeling as I gaze at the distant horizon,

The world’s edge has a message my vision to widen.

I will sit here a while as birds fly under heaven’s dome,

No doubt they too are searching for their way home.

Home is wherever you are at the moment, or so I have found of late. I even rarely go to the beach and ocean where I was raised and nurtured, but find of late to be sorely lacking in an attraction for me, hope you find your way home, get some old maps and don't rely on GPS for rarely are they ever right...-e-

As you so adroitly point out, we all must find the solitude whereby the "...a message my vision to widen." For some of us, that is the only way. Beatifully rendered consideration for one's personal quest for nirvana.

I've learned the hard way that there's no going home again. Even if you get there physically both you and they have changed, no longer the same. Even the place is changed. But we can always wish and maybe even hope to one day find it again somewhere and somehow.
