-- The Three Conditions of Love --

John Herlihy

Condition one: looking for love,

Looking for wind: the wings of a dove.

Every smile a potential candidate,

A lingering glance your next mate.

Walking around, your glass half empty,

Gazing around, your glass half full.

Every day brings sweet expectation,

Every night brings feelings of question.

Patient waiting perfumes the mind,

Searching for love, even if it’s blind.

Condition two: already in love,

Flying high on the wings of a dove.

Every smile my love sealing,

A lingering glance my mind reeling.

Walking around, your glass totally full,

Love’s fingers on my heartstrings pull.

Every day brings sweet expectation,

Every night brings feelings of perfection.

Garden flowers perfume the mind,

This love of mine can never be blind.

Condition three: fallen out of love,

Feather lost from the wing of a dove.

Every smile but a painful memory,

A lingering glance but a sad reverie.

Walking around, your glass totally empty,

Feeling nostalgia for the days of plenty.

Every day brings sad expectation,

Every night brings feelings of rejection.

Searching for and being in love totally right,

Rejected and fallen out of love totally wrong.

I will be in the second condition all my life, if God and I have our way, lol, Your poetry astounds me. There is great beauty to be derived from your heart, John, thank you for sharing. xo

Too bad the second condition lasts for too short a time period. We spend most of our lives either searching for or regretting love.

Oh, it is that third "Condition" brings about caution and building walls. Love can be the most wonderful feeling in the world otherwise as you so well describe, John! Write on, hon!!

Love ya!

Love is a real task maker, as illustrated by your brilliant poem expressing how love goes. Kudos!

A beautiful poem, well expressed and, what's more, achingly accurate. Here's to hoping the third condition isn't a morose pattern.
