-- Little and Big Loneliness --

John Herlihy

Some loneliness feels oh so small,

A little lonely, but not really at all.

You know loneliness soon to be past,

This kind of loneliness will never last.

Some loneliness feels oh so large,

Such a loneliness to lose courage.

You know this loneliness never spent,

This kind of loneliness will never relent.

The little loneliness has an air positive,

The big loneliness has an air negative.

The little loneliness teaches a thing pure,

The big loneliness we can hardly endure.

To the little loneliness, I even say hello,

Big loneliness makes me want to bellow.

The big loneliness raises its ugly head late at night as I try to sleep. And that's when I do my best writing. We must fight the monster.

At this time, the world is in a state of both lonlinesses. One of the risks, as you've aptly pointed out, is sinking into a frame of mind with the big lonliness of being angy, bellowing, but possibly affecting little change. Yes, as a species learning the hard way that we are not special, but merely with a different sentient quality. We too are weak, struggling for strength. This piece is particularly well framed for our consideration.

Unfortunately being lonely has been a constant since I was a child. The current need to isolate has only exacerbated the condition. Oh to be only a little lonely!

There are times when I like to be alone. There are times when I need to be alone, but I dislike being lonely.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
