-- Wanting and Waiting --

John Herlihy

Our frantic wanting pushes us out of ourselves,

Stirring desires that play around like little elves.

Waiting slowly gathers strength that lies within,

Prepared to wait and wait no matter how grim.

Desire is fine until we desire the wrong thing,

Only to see how unpleasantness can take wing.

Patience a virtue whose power makes us proud,

We suffer forbearance as if wrapped in a shroud.

Wanting seizes our hearts when impulses run wild,

The panting of galloping horses cannot be slowed.

While waiting pulls in our reins, to breathe mild,

As we move forward, the whole world is towed.

Wanting nothing but an empty sack never filled,

Waiting soothes the anxious heart, now stilled.

A nice comparison of the two… One an emotion, and the other a strategy. When emotions flareup, we often get what we want in haste and impulsiveness. But if we wait until that passion dies down, we may find a better way to go that results in fewer mistakes that may be life-threatening if we carry them too far.

Good one… Really makes the reader think.

To want is to never be satisfied whereas waiting gives one plenty of time to savor and appreciate the harvest, whatever that may be. There's a lot of wisdom in this poem. Well penned.

Cool write. We can want all we want, but the good things are worth waiting for. and in this age of instant gratification, waiting has become passe.
