-- TO MEAN SOMETHING --

John Herlihy

May our sorrows and joys mean something,

An extra dimension to what life may bring.

We all have our own way to explain our life,

Heaven and oblivion intermingled with strife.

Chance, happenstance, karma, just plain fate,

We are but the end result of what we make.

The death of a loved one, even my pet turtle,

Christmas stockings, kissing under the myrtle.

A failure to win, to receive that valued reward,

To whisper hopes, hear nothing from the Lord.

We make our way wondering what it all means,

We don’t know for sure, life a mystery it seems.

To accept destiny as it comes, our song to sing,

So that our sorrows and joys mean something.

I THINK THAT THIS IS WHAT OUR LIVING IS REALLY ALL ABOUT, JOHN; TO HAVE THE FAITH TO KNOW OUR EXISTENCE 'MEANS SOMETHING'. TO ME THE PERFECT BIBLICAL BOOK THAT CORRELATES THIS POWERFUL POSTING IS 'JOB'. HE UNDERSTOOD NOTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING TO HIM, ALL HE KNEW WAS THAT 'HIS REDEEMER LIVED'. THUS, WE MAY NEVER 'SEE' THE REASON FOR OUR LIVING, NOT ON 'THIS SIDE' ANYHOW...BUT ONE MUST 'BELIEVE' THAT GOD NEVER MAKES A MISTAKE AND EVERY BREATH THAT GOD GIVES US IS FOR A 'PURPOSE' AND INDEED, 'MEANS SOMETHING'. GREAT WORK, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS

There's the old saying that life is what we make it. I think that's so. Every experience, good and bad, is a treasure, for we learn from it. We can use it to formulate the way we see it and how we will proceed, or we can use it as an excuse or a crutch to cripple us. It all depends upon the meaning we give it.

Our sorrows and joys have different meaning for us. For some they give us hope while others they give despair. I think you covered the gamut very well with this poem.

I recall we had those turtles as pets but don't recall mourning any that died. I do recall getting quite good at "winging" flies with my flyswatter so they would be still alive when presented to my pet turtle that gladly chomped down on and swallowed the still wiggling treat. I just felt that the yellow powder sprinkled on the water was just not good food for my little amphibian captive.
