THE HOURS OF ETERNITY

_____________________________

John Herlihy

We have no sense of what eternity is,

But we do know what eternity is not.

Minutes and seconds add up to mystery,

But no hour can ever call itself eternity.

Our waiting can sometimes last forever,

Eternity stolen into moments of time.

A sad day always seems to go on forever,

Sorrow’s timelessness feels like an incline.

Out of time into the hours of eternity leap,

Time begins to crawl as our sorrows weep.

Our happiness in fleeting moments of time,

Our sadness endless hours of eternal time.

Let me return once again to time’s embrace,

To count eternity’s hours as they keep apace.

'ETERNITY'... ALL WE KNOW THAT IT GOES ON FOREVER. THUS, WHEN USING IT IN A DESCRIPTIVE FORM OF ANY HEIGHTS OR DEPTHS, IT REALLY IS A WORD THAT HARDLY EVER STANDS ALONE FOR, IT IS OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY THE PHRASE, 'SEEMED LIKE'. ETERNITY CANNOT, OF COURSE, BE MEASURED OR COUNTED BECAUSE WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT AND CAN...ONLY SPECULATE. BUT, FOR THOSE OF US THAT 'BELIEVE', IT IS A GLORIOUS STATE OF BEING THAT WE ALL LOOK FORWARD TO. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS

The fact that our perceptions of time are so fluid brings to my mind the image of eternity as a long, single ribbon that undulates with our experiences. We give those undulations names, such as hours, minutes, and days, but in reality time and eternity cannot be pigeon holed.

we can only look at time in the way man has divided it so we can comprehend what our minds can get wrapped around.
