-- Aromas We Cannot Smell --

John Herlihy

Aromas with a rare smell,

Because they have no scent.

So much they do tell,

And we know what they meant.

Those whitecaps breaking off-shore,

A smell riding the waves the winds bring.

Visions of lilies and lilacs and more,

A distinctive smell that makes the heart sing.

The color of rain invisible to see,

Blending with tree bark and emerald grass.

The scent of rain fused by nature’s beauty,

A world of freshness reflected in its glass.

The over-arching sky, the smell of its blue,

Even the ocean hangs its head in shame.

Those bluebells and bluebirds never knew,

We breathe heaven’s blue in our windowpane.

Those clouds gathering forces to release their rain,

They remember cotton, linen, and night pillows.

In a steady wind, they move on and no longer remain,

Having drenched the green threads of weeping willows.

The smell of the ocean announces itself in the air,

The rumbling surg not yet seen, but clearly heard.

The salty sea whispers its secrets as a prayer,

The ocean’s scent as powerful as the unspoken word.

Finally, imagine the exotic blessing of a rare scent,

Signaling a spiritual presence when no one is there.

We need to address the mysteries Heaven has lent,

Accept certain truths we are not otherwise aware.

OKAY...WHEN I LOOK AT A BEAUTIFUL SKY I CANNOT SMELL IT, BUT MY SPIRIT CONNECTS WITH IT AND INHALES ITS FRAGRANCE...AND IT BECOMES TANGIBLE TO ME, I 'SMELL' IT! LIKE THE PHOTO ABOVE. I CAN'T ACTUALLY SMELL THE SEA, HEAR THE WAVES AND THE SEAGULLS BUT I SEE IT AND MY SENSE OF SEEING TRANSMITS THE SOUNDS AND AROMA OF IT TO ME. OUR SENSES GO FAR BEYOND, JUST TASTING, SEEING, TOUCHING, FEELING, ETC INDEED. THANKS FOR THE SHARING. LOVE,BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Every now and then I catch a faint whiff of roses when there's not a rose in sight. Someone once told me it's the scent of love on the air.

So many scents, so little time.

A wash of fine imagery to support your theme. Smells that do not have a clear cause are most intriguing. I can attest personally that the Creator has given humans the olfaction that is sensitive to what draws near us from the spirit realm. And the spirit realm is not some place far away either, it's with us. Some of the smells are sweet as night jasmine, and some of them smell like sulfurous death. Thanks for sharing. rlc

John, this is so beautiful. Descriptions so real, I could smell the essence of the rain and that wonderful fragrance of rain on a thirsty earth.
