-- High Hopes --

John Herlihy

A river flows before me that I must cross,

If I stayed on this side, it would be a loss.

I’m going to make it across this raging river,

No one will notice or care, I’m just a sliver.

I would ask you along, but I know you can’t come,

You have your own life, your husband, a son.

I’ll keep looking, for love is going to find me,

I’ve been in shadows long enough, me with me.

Even if love takes me not, I will still love give,

Even if love blesses me not, I will still love live.

Beyond the river lies a verdant plain laid bare,

I see my future in the distance, no joy to spare.

I live quietly in shadows of the suns high hopes,

Driven by an inner music that plays delicate notes.

I love this poem! It speaks of the complexities of hope. The ups and downs. Definitely a keeper.

"No one will notice or care" Everyone that reads this will notice, so that alone will make you more than a 'sliver on a river'. Speaking from experience: "Me with me" can get quite mind-numbing. All of us need a sounding board. Someone that loves us unconditionally for who we are, encourages us, and who can show us the error (and folly) of our ways. God never intended us to live alone and unloved. This touched me John. All the best. rlc
