-- An Ancient Law -- John Herlihy An ancient law Carved on cave walls In the rings of tree trunks Washed in marshland mud Hatched by watchful hawks Nurtured by vigilant doves Whispers heard in bird wings Seen in the lamps of fireflies The miracle of beginnings The mystery of endings The final breath finished The last step taken In the eye a question Seeing another world Eyelids close into night At the end, a light Life itself passing Into love, a beginning - - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Saturday 6 March 2021
