-- Starless Night --
John Herlihy
For once, the night was starless,
It could hardly be called night.
Endless sea of numbing darkness,
A horrific, strangely enduring sight.
The restless stars are allowed to roam,
But who said they could disappear.
In our hearts here below, we simply groan,
Waiting patiently for the stars to reappear.
Those dazzling stars offer glimmers of hope,
Ever winking of the promise of the eternal.
As we slip here below down a slippery slope,
We look in vain into the darkened night nocturnal.
It is one thing to see those stars twinkling overhead,
We hardly noticed what we now take for granted.
Yet, on this particular night, no stars there instead,
A deep sense of loss into our hearts firmly planted.
The long, starless night cast in mystery still,
Wondering where the stars are, we simply yearn.
This darksome solitude will forever fill,
The heart, until those beloved stars return.

Where I live here in the city, we have light pollution to the point where we rarely see the stars unless we make a concerted effort to look up from our busy lives and then, we will only see the brighter stars and planets.
And that "twinkling" that poets and dreamers love to write about, is merely our atmosphere refracting the light from the stars. When we move out in space, the sky will be completely black and the stars will no longer blink at us but be brighter and more brilliant and awe-inspiring than we ever can see them from here on the earth. Our astronauts can attest to that.
But it's really nice that you honor the value of stars. From your location on the desert, you have one of the best views like all of the caravans did for thousands of years, guiding them at night.

Moon and Stars’ …
Always expecting one with the other…
They are often symbols of Hope,
Lighting up our lives and our dreams,
as they light up our skies…
