-- As Time Goes By --

John Herlihy

As time goes by,

Across the earth we roam.

As a bird in the sky,

Ever seeking our true home.

As time goes by,

The blue jay builds its nest.

On the mercy of Heaven to rely,

Never to worry about the rest.

As time goes by,

Let the wind take me away.

This breath in the blue sky,

Echoes what I have to say.

As time goes by,

No questions will be asked.

Everything has reasons why,

May we always be up to the task.

As time goes by,

Songs unsung born of gentle wind.

There in the blue of sky,

The sweetest sound no heart can rescind.

As time goes by,

Such joy only melody could express.

Evil forces witness our cry,

Such sorrow only adagios could confess.

As time goes by,

I will sing on forever.

The moment approaches nigh,

But the spirit voice ends never.

As time goes by,

I will never sing again.

Sweet bird of youth did fly,

Up and away at the end.

As time goes by,

The death song never heard.

Only the faintest sigh,

Whispered tale of an ancient bird.

As time goes by,

Left behind quiet draws near.

Descending from on high,

The awesome silence held dear.

As the orbit of earth turns,

I bid the world goodbye.

The song of the ages will return,

As time, blessed time, goes by.

Your poems, more and more, speak of the end of life. This one is no exception, retrieving memories of what has gone by with time, finally ending with a simple, "goodbye."

I certainly hope you don't live another 20 years or you may start writing like Charlie did before he left us, writing about the pleasures of carnal exploration like he was a teenager. As time went by.

I prefer writing about the here and now and let whatever happens in the future, happen.
