-- Voices of the Sea --

John Herlihy

In the solitude of my mind,

I hear the waves of oceans meet.

Rhythms of many a different kind,

To create melodies that resonate sweet,

In humble introspection, we do the sea greet.

It is night but the sea has awoken,

Cresting waves break into milky froth.

Tonight, and every night, they have spoken,

Under a silent Milky Way held aloft.

The hardened heart now feels soft.

The rising tide rushes onward,

Blackened waters the pale shore to meet.

There as a roaring wind rises skyward,

Voices out of the silence of the deep,

Whose sea-tides make their way inward.

Overhead the stars stand multiplied.

They speak with a silence deep.

The inspirations of night intensified,

As the rain clouds of heaven gently weep,

Falling thru weightless air now purified.

Who can complain of such solitudes,

When our souls thrive in their midst.

We are now all but filled with plenitudes,

Leaving behind the sea’s voices in the mist,

As we fly soar upward into such infinitudes.

You've penned a worthy appraisal of the often forgotten aspects of the sea's personality. Well done.

From "Mother Ocean" as many believe we came and to her we return. Even the sound of a rippling brook can heal. Your words are lovely, as I would expect, John.

Love ya!

Infinitudes, indeed. Our genetic memory goes back to when we were sea creatures millions of years ago. So we feel the sea and the waves touching the shore so vividly in our genetic memory. Where but in the sea, is the sky so open and free? Those millions of years of watching it through primitive eyes and finding the comfort in its lasting lessons.
