-- The Last Hope --

John Herlihy

The last hope may well be the first,

The last frail desire to quench my thirst.

The last feeble wish appearing as dutiful,

The last budding bloom emerging as beautiful.

The first hope that ever crossed my path,

The first despair lost in the aftermath.

The first dawning hope shining without end,

The first dying hope to mark hope’s end.

All those hopes in between as subtle tones,

All those hopes now crushed into broken bones.

All those hopes whispering secrets to say,

All those hopes but random pebbles on the way.

The first hope shines as a star nocturnal,

The last hope survives as a promise eternal.

ONE IS LOST WITHOUT THE OTHER. FOR, WE CAN'T LOOK FORWARD TO THE COMING OF THE ETERNAL LAST HOPE...UNTIL WE HAVE CAPTURED AND FAITHFULLY TREASURED THE APPEARING OF THE FIRST HOPE. WELL DONE AND ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I like this, how it takes turns between darkness and light. Strong lines, these: “The first despair lost in the aftermath.” and “All those hopes now crushed into broken bones.” Each positive and each negative carry the heft of this concept, the way you have written them. ~~ djl

Hope may be the last vestige of the struggle many will ever experience. It would be rewarding to see hope find more traction in a world that is rather spinning out of control in a downward direction toward the abyss of dismay, distrust, and ultimate self-destruction. I, for one, remain hopeful not in the sense that things will change, but in the hope I'll adjust and still find joy and reward reading work like you often create.
