-- Never So Fine --
John Herlihy
Hope never felt so precious, so fine,
As when it sprouts from the soil of despair.
A belonging hope, a hope solely mine,
Like a shiny coin, or the inner light of prayer.
Despair holds close the blackness of night,
Tempered by the eternal glow of a solitary star.
Who could imagine in such darkness such light,
From millions of miles, a gift delivered from afar.
Hope a protective shield, gleaming in light,
Such vistas never imagined coming to the fore.
A possibility as a promise that gives me the right,
To envision the road of my destiny as never before.
When in the cavernous depths of deep despair,
I couldn’t bear the brunt of another’s sad lament.
My recourse lay in the entreaties of sincere prayer,
To serve as a soothing balm from Heaven sent.
In faithfully arriving, the first light of dawn never dims,
So also the enduring light of hope in the heart brims.
