-- It Must Be the Future --

John Herlihy

It must be the future,

But it feels like the past.

Time always moves forward,

But it will never last.

It must be happiness,

But it feels like sorrow.

All things are transitory,

Here today, gone tomorrow.

You must be my new love,

But you feel like my old love.

When beginning feels like end,

Surely, we can no longer pretend.

It must be dawn,

But it feels like twilight.

When things go wrong,

it always seems like night.

It must be tomorrow,

But it feels like yesterday.

They say everything changes,

The day’s tedium has little to say.

If must be nothing

But it feels like something

Love’s loss is a thing gone

Something nothing may bring

It must be empty

But it seems full

Think of all the potential

Subject to our own will

It must be true ,

But it feels so false.

I want to believe in it,

But where is the pulse.

It must be gain,

But it feels like loss.

A bounty we didn’t earn,

Still feeling the need to yearn.

The mind may many things suppose,

But only the heart really knows.

My apologies for not keeping up with your wonderful work, but have been healing from a traumatic event. This poem is of such natural essence of life. I am deeply moved by it. The heart indeed really knows. Thank you for posting.
