-- This Sweet Mystery of Love –

John Herlihy

The intimate tenderness of love shared by these two.

It takes two to keep a secret, this secret well kept.

An enduring secret they would never ever share,

Impossible for other to appreciate, fruitless to know.

The quiet, soothing silence that surrounded them,

The bubbling laughter, laughing at itself, at the world.

A question passed over the surface of her open face.

She stepped forward, kissed him with scented breath.

A phoenix rising from the ashes, newly transformed.

A moment when everything seemed ready to give way.

Now transformed into something else, something unseen,

Yet remembered in the soft light of dawn, the night sky.

The air alive with breeze, silence sang music of contentment.

The night surrounded them with mystery as they walked away.

Some new way of being; some new way of living in the world.

Where the bud blooms, the mind scented with promise, hope.

A new incarnation of earth and sky, everything reconciled.

Light shimmering beyond the window; wind stirring the trees.

Such velvet softness felt by the feathery breath of their love,

This sweet mystery of love that makes everything meaningful.

When two hearts come together in the realization that they need each other more than each one needs complete freedom, then the sum of those two is multiplied greatly in terms of love and understanding. When it happens, like your poem describes, it's magic.
