-- LISTENING TO THE RAIN –
John Herlihy
Roars of primitive lions came out of a cloud-filled sky,
As certainty of an answer addressing the question why.
The insistent rain on pavements and roofs drumming,
The driving rhythms send forth a constant humming.
The rain as lace curtains blowing silvery in the wind,
Disappearing in the sodden earth, blessing bestowing.
The lashing rain a multitude of drops dancing, dancing,
A sleek shiny colt over the land prancing and prancing.
The downpour moved agitatedly as waves in sea current,
The great cloud mass overhead looked never to be spent.
Silvery threads of wet light devoured by the depthless void,
Winter trees stood like bones, summer’s beauty destroyed.
The rain heavy on the eaves, emitting its signature sound,
Rain gutters well-nigh speaking as drops fall to the ground.
The rain drops hissing and burning on the lantern, steaming,
Soon no more ears listening, just light of the moon beaming.
Music of the rain brings feelings of calm to the restless mind,
A moody turbulence of thoughts and dreams soothingly kind.
Rain has stopped and the clouds have disappeared into the night,
Nothing of the rain left behind but the arrival of dawn’s dewy light.

We've had a long, dry period that is being broken by several days of rain. Whenever I hear the rain coming I go to the front deck and watch the water off the large roof overpower the trough in a mighty stream that crashes like a waterfall on the sidewalk below, eventually flooding it for a few hours until the water slowly seeps back into the soil to feed our aquifer in a few short years.
