-- WEIGHT IN THE BALANCE –

John Herlihy

Adjectives have a weight

That lies in the balance.

Just as a life has its fate

In the tempo of its dance.

The day lasts oh so long,

But the hours oh so short.

The night may darkness prolong,

With premonitions never sought.

The morning will arrive soon,

But the moon rises late.

The flower’s beauty awaits its bloom,

Leaving satisfaction in its wake.

Heavy the cup that is filled,

That once meekly stood empty.

Fluttering heartbeats now stilled,

Blessing its source of blessing.

Our sorrows feel so heavy,

As in the depths of despair.

Whereas our joys feel so light,

As in the comfort of prayer.

Trust offers a bond revealing,
Touching tenderly with its caress.

Distrust creates a barrier concealing,

Touching harshly with its distress.

Certainty can seem so compelling,

Luring us forward with its charm.

Whereas doubts can be so telling,

Luring us backward with its harm.

Wings provide the desired lift,

Soaring as light as a feather.

Storm clouds gather as a gift,

Nurturing the land in heavy weather.

For every sentiment an adjective,

Our feelings be they high or low.

Making their way thru life’s sieve,

Either taut or loose on life’s bow.

THE 'WEIGHT' IN AN HONEST BALANCE IS OF COURSE...GOD. OTHERWISE, WE OF OURSELVES COULD NEVER ATTAIN IT. GREAT POETIC SHARING, ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Words, adverbs and adjectives have grown in the lexicon that writers use, making it even more powerful for poets like you to express thoughts and deeds into your poetic word. Change is never ending and once in a while upsets the balance that needs to be redirected again with gentle prodding like your poems often suggest.

You can glean truth out of just about anything. I never really thought about it that way, but you are right.

The adjective indeed proves to create the dressing upon so much of life. As your poem addresses, the adjective, like most of living's decisions, offers multiple ways to help communicate the feeling of the nouns of every day. Enjoyed this.
