-- Sometimes Our Memories Sweeter --

John Herlihy

Sometimes memories taste sour,

When resurrected from the past.

Sometimes our memories sweeter,

Of happy days that will forever last.

Sometimes the person is kinder,

If it be unknown who they are.

The stranger needs no reminder,

As near to us as a far distant star.

Sometimes memories are darker,

Past experience filled with regret.

Sometimes memories are brighter,

As blessings that we never forget.

Sometimes voices sound harsher,

A nagging wife, an angered father.

Sometimes voices sound tender,

An innocent child, one’s mother.

Sometimes the world feels lonelier,

Without any hope, without a friend.

Sometimes the world feels friendlier,

Feeling at peace, no need to pretend.

Sometimes things happen to us sooner,

Unexpectedly with the blink of an eye.

Sometimes things happen to us later,

On some hour/day, we never know why.

Sometimes passing days feel shorter,

Minutes and hours fly by with speed.

Sometimes passing days feel longer,

Time on our hands without the need.

Sometimes our hearts beat weaker,

Without sustaining any vital power.

Sometimes our hearts beat stronger,

Budding into bloom as a dawn flower.

Sometimes thoughts wade shallower,

As if seeking something never found.

Sometimes thoughts run far deeper,

Lifting us up into a realm profound.

AN APPRECIATION FOR 'ALL OUR ROADS', GOOD OR BAD, COMES WITH TIME AND WISDOM. SO, WHEN ONE FINALLY ARRIVES AT THE REALIZATION THAT OUR ENTIRE LIFE'S JOURNEY IS ABOUT...A CLOSER WALK WITH GOD, THEN ALL OUR MEMORIES BECOME TAINTED WITH 'HIS' GLOW OF PEACE AND LOVE...CERTAINLY, BECOMING SWEETER. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT, BUT WHEN THE TIME...IS FULLY COME. MARVELOUS, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE,BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Your poem is like that forest Gump cliché… "Life is like a box of chocolates… You never know what you're going to get." Sometimes, it bes that way.

My bitter have become sweeter with age. Glad that some of those losses happened would've taken me on the wrong path anyway.

I have found that sometimes you are left with bitter memories and in time they fade away and you start remembering the good times. I guess memories are like a fine wine, they grow sweeter with time. Excellent write.

I especially appreciate the last stanza, allowing all the preceding stanzas to mount up into the inevitable ending. There is much wisdom and experience woven into this arresting piece of wordsmithing. Thank you.

Trying to weed out the sour memories is not an easy task. I'll attest to that. Those profound realms though, John, are the ones I pray for daily. The ones where eternal wisdom and originality is given freely. Enjoyed this. Happy September. r
