-- So Far from Home --
John Herlihy
My true home found so far from home,
A veteran wanderer in a far distant land.
Forever searching under Heaven’s dome,
To be lovingly guided by the Divine Hand.
Though I wander far, my home always near,
As close to me as another, a second heart.
Always living on the edge, at the tip of a spear,
On the bow’s arrow, always ready to depart.
At the end of life, no more counting of the days,
The cup filled then emptied, now in sweet repose.
One road left to journey after many different ways,
An unknown destination before me, only God knows.
May my body be carried gently thru a field of buttercups,
May my soul be perfumed in the scent of forget-me-nots.
Never near, never far, there in the heart of my true home,
In contentment and peace, under the grand celestial dome.
