-- No Happiness Without Worry –

John Herlihy

My happiness gains no firm traction,

Without a little worry on standby.

Stopping far short of true satisfaction,

With a few niggling fears on the sly.

Happiness serves as a dangerous precedent,

Arriving as if never to go away.

Settling in the mind as permanent residence,

Every intention to be there for a long stay.

The happiness feels rich if I have worries endured,

Awkward indeed if happiness were eternal bliss.

If all my worries into a cup of happiness poured,

Then my trials and tribulations I would never miss.

Yet our worries serve as an unintended goal,

That happiness has its own stated mission.

Reminding us of worries our own happiness stole,

There at least temporarily before remission.

Such forces that work beyond our control,

Circumstances arise that steer our destiny.

As waves cresting and troughing two-fold,

As persistent ebb and flow in life’s mystery.

Worries remind us of what we must bear,

Troubles to sort out, problems to solve.

When resolution comes, happiness we share,

Any suffering our happiness will absolve.

If our happiness gains no true traction,

Then our worries and fears suffer the same.

One brings discontent, the other satisfaction,

Endurance as pivot our balance to claim.

For insights of our worries, we give thanks sure,

Teaching us lessons we may otherwise miss.

In the wake of our problems, happiness feels pure,

As birds flying high over – not into – the abyss.

HAPPINESS DEPENDS ON WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR LIVES. WE AS HUMAN BEINGS ARE SO FICKLE. I MEAN, I JUST KNOW IF WE LIVED A LIFETIME OF NEVER ENDURING WORRY OR HARDSHIPS BUT ALWAYS STAYED IN HAPPINESS LANE...THERE WOULD STILL BE COMPLAINTS ABOUT SOMETHING. SO VALLEYS ARE GOOD, SO MUCH LEARNED THERE. AND THE ASSENT IS MARVELOUS AS WE EMERGE FROM OUR TRIAL, WISER. BUT THEN THERE'S THE JOY FOUND ON THE SO NECESSARY PLATEAUS THAT LEAD US ON TO ANOTHER UP OR DOWN EXPERIENCE. INDEED...THERE'S NO HAPPINESS WITHOUT WORRY...THANK GOD! ENJOYED, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

You are so right. Our happiness must be guarded against the "slings and arrows" of life that befall us all.

I'm a generally happy fellow and try not to think of bad thoughts of what might be, take me away from being happy. But I do know that it will come a time, where things may get quite rough on both me and my partner as we struggle with the life/death issue bearing down on us. For now, our happiness keeps it at bay.

True that without one we might not appreciate the other as much. Hardship either make us or break us it’s said. But I think everyone has the capacity to build endurance. What separate us is the people we have or don’t have around us. There has got to be at least one there that believe in us. But then again, social science is my thing. Love the questions this poem made me ponder.

So, once again the paradox of life takes center stage with probably the two most dominant emotions we possess. Like many other aspects of gaining knowledge and hopefully some wisdom, there is the need for both, even though we'd like less worry. Yet, without the degree of worry to create for ourselves, there wouldn't be that moment of ahha when happiness takes a peek, regardless of its short or long duration. Mmm. Seems the short straw is winning for many.
