-- Heart Rhythms --
John Herlihy
My heart will not confide its secrets to me;
I do not fully know what I may want to see.
Moonlight flickers impishly on waves of the bay,
Without revealing any secrets that it may say.
Today I may feel love, while tomorrow distain;
At dawn I know, in the evening doubts remain.
The moon of my fickle heart waxes and wanes;
Moonbeams quietly flow thru streams of veins.
While my mind remains ever eager to confide;
My heart’s sinuous caverns have intent to hide.
All the emotions at rest in this mysterious realm,
As the guiding light of my being stands at the helm.
True love has no need in anything to confide;
Heart rhythms offer safe refuge to quietly reside.
No secret confidences, but quiet happiness prevails,
When love is freely given and no expectation entails.
Whenever the thought of her crossed my mind,
Happiness needed no prodding my heart to remind.
Even my sleep attended by the sweetest of dreams,
My heart’s emotion feels no need to boast it seems.
My days are emptied by her elusive absence;
My days are filled with her elusive presence.
Whether emptied or filled, my days complete,
I still think of her and am ever ready to meet.
Similar joy underlays my dreams during the night,
Deepest desires continue to live in unconscious sight.
I tried to capture the essence of her unfailing charm,
My thoughts unravelling brought me no undue harm.
Whether awake or asleep, we savor love’s beauty;
The heart and soul wrapped in contented intimacy.
