-- In This Life -- John Herlihy In this life, Few are those Who remember how to live as children. Many are those Who forget how to live as children. In this life, Few are those Who finally realize what they always wanted. Many are those Who never realize what they truly wanted. In this life, Few are those Who can put their wandering minds to rest. Many are those Whose minds are always putting them to the test. In this life, Few are those Who make a reality the stuff of their dreams. Many are those Whose imagination fosters no compelling dreams. In this life, Few are those With strength the one thing needful to remember. Many are those Who in weakness the one thing needful they forget. In this life, Few are those Who can draw nuggets of wisdom from their sorrows. Many are those Who hope nuggets of happiness will fill their tomorrows. In this life, Few are those Who shed their fears for a true sense of freedom. In this life, Many are those Who are bounded by fears from having any true freedom. Life is full of surprises, But only a few ever come to realize them. As your last stanza hammers home, "life is full of miseries, but far too many always come to suffer from them"... and perhaps the greatest loss is the lessons unlearned from the suffering. As the first part of your exploration states, children haven't hardened to how-not to learn a lesson. Sad, but exhilarating for those of us who know as adults we deal ourselves the same lesson over and over until we learn it... or, in so as happens in many cases, remain ignorant of the blessing.

Much wisdom in the poem. Often we don't see what is right in front of us and end up with nothing. Another fine piece from the word master.
