-- I Can Hear the Music --

John Herlihy

I can hear it, the soft music,

The brook and the stream.

The ripples create sacred music,

Birds at dawn, falling spring rain.

Everything seems to take part,

All the fortissimos and pianissimos.

Arriving at the door of the heart,

All the arpeggios and the sad adagios.

And you, once a beloved stranger,

Arrived with your own subtle music.

Now beloved, no longer a stranger,

To create harmonies of blended music.

A melancholy harmonica, the lilting lute,

Melodies that float on passing winds.

We listen to the music, rendered mute,

The mind rejoices just as the face grins.

Infinities upon infinities, gently rocking,

This earthly music turns celestial instead.

Eternities upon eternities gently knocking,

As beatific visions soaring within my head.

Once upon a time, the music was gone,

Lost in sorrow and bereft of all harmony.

Not a note or cord, silence as a ghost song,

Waiting patiently for music and its epiphany.

The music of life breaks us down, lifts aloft,

Nature’s melodies heard in the roar of waves.

The voice of the wind heard with whispers soft,

Spring waters illuminating the darkness of caves.

The music of the spirit all comes together,

Melodic emotions that not otherwise heard.

All enveloped within a love that endures forever,

Stolen from the ancient tongue of a primitive bird.

Born of a mystery never on earth to be resolved,

Tempting us, enchanting us, desiring to be solved.

WHEN TWO CHIMES FIND EACH OTHER AND 'SING' TOGETHER...THERE IS NO TELLING OF THE MUSIC THEY CAN CREATE. AND USUALLY(HOPEFULLY REALLY) THE BOND IS UNBREAKABLE...FOR IF THERE IS A SEPARATION FROM THE 'SPIRIT' ONE PROBABLY WILL NEVER 'SING' AGAIN. AHHHH...SUCH A MARVELOUS WAY TO DESCRIBE...THE LOVE LIFE! THANK YOU! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Had things been different, I could well have been an opera singer rather than a writer, but, in the end I naturally gravitated to what I was best at. However, I remain sensitive to the power that music holds for us, and it is an awesome power at that.

The realm of sound and the musical meaning to so much that is not instrument-based is a long-lasting interest I've had since my days in NY. I found so much sound that became music, especially late at night while staying awake in a darkened room, the window open and the many night sounds of Manhattan making a virtual symphony at times.

Your opening two stanzas are wonderful, John. My favorite among these is stanza 5, especially “Eternities upon eternities gently knocking,” Lots of people writing about music right now. Makes me wonder if “The music of the spirit all comes together,” for us all this week. Thanks for this ~~ djl

Music seems to be inherent to all humans. It is part of ritual of all cultures. Your poem covers that gamut well.

Although I attempted to play musical instruments in my youth, I wasn't focused enough and didn't do well, or stay with it until I did. And during my school work I didn't listen to music because it affected by concentration. But I always listened to music on the car radio.

But I always sang in groups. Until my 20s. Now, I listen to music before I go to bed, interested in older songs with clear lyrics. Often during the day a line from a song will pop into my head. And I can make up a song very easy and sing it a cappella. I just love to sing while not knowing all the words.

"Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks, and invents." The man who wrote this revelation was almost completely deaf when he wrote the 9th Symphony. Enjoyed this, John. A unique and beautiful insight. Peace.... r
