-- We --

By John Herlihy

We

As a silhouette

Against dawn light

Born as a shadow

Drawn from night

Shadow casting shadows

Ephemeral, forgettable

Wishing to be remembered

Wishing to be memorable

We

As soft moonglow

Touching earth’s night

Caressing as a shadow

Our virtue seen as light

The stronger the light

The weaker the shadow

The weaker the light

The stronger the shadow

We

As a bubbling spring

Rising from the earth

Our heart rhythms sing

Traced back to our birth

Now as a surging river

Emotions in ebb and flow

Mind as gold and silver

Of all we will ever know

We

As a field of poppies red

Lending color to mountains

Our hearts beat and bled

Awash in spring fountains

Truth and beauty in the fore

Mountains bedecked in snow

This we are and so much more

Gathered into all that we sow

We

As one born blind

The invisible never to see

Yet the inner eye most kind

Out of depths to see beyond me

Not only with the sense of sight

That a person opens eyes and sees

We listen, not see, the wind of night

Feel, not see, the blessing of its breeze

We

As vast ocean

Immeasurably deep

With a mystic potion

That allows us to seek

Waves that ebb and flow

Seeking the eternal shore

One thing needful, we know

The Lord God, we do implore

I particularly like the premise of this piece in that the "we" is also the "one" of everything, interlocking, interchanging life, be it flower, ocean, or the blind. Very far-reaching, this poetic review of the obvious for many of us.
