This Poem
by John Herlihy
I have written this poem,
In the solitude of myself.
To lie on a page in a book,
Resting on a bottom shelf.
Scripted with feathered pen,
The verses uttered as whisper.
Indigo ink permanence lend,
To serve the reader as uplifter.
Written by candle at night,
Words as flame on the wick.
Casting shadows in the light,
As the seconds of time tick.
A poem born in mystery,
Unfolded petals of wonder.
To find residence in eternity,
Ever heard as distant thunder.
In the reading of each line,
To the poet’s voice listen.
Each word as sparks shine,
As stars in darkness glisten.
In this way, poetic spirit lives on,
Locked in the letters of sound.
A poem in the heart to rest upon,
Beating with a rhythm profound.
I have written this poem,
In the quiet of night at home.
For the ages my humble anthem,
Now written., I am no longer alone.

In the last hundred and fifty years the way poems are written and published has changed so much, that almost anyone, even without penmanship ability or the skill to use a quill pen, can readily write poems in a myriad of ways and send them or publish them also in the myriad of ways.
