-- As a Bird to Fly --
by John Herlihy
l lay down in the grass not a word heard,
Wishing with all my heart that I could fly.
To soar as an eagle, such a magnificent bird,
I count from one to ten, breathe deeply, sigh.
As I look up, I am by the heavens swallowed,
Finding myself in the realm of infinite blue.
Flying in the company of birds, feeling hallowed,
Riding the invisible waves that the wind blew.
I flew into the sunset at the end of the day,
The fiery rays of the sun singe my wings.
Feelings of freedom impossible to convey,
Lost in a maze of mystery as my heart sings.
Even birds return to earth and take rest,
At one with the soul, by the night caressed.
