-- Why the Leaves Green -- by John Herlihy Why are the leaves green and the sky blue More we know not than the little we knew Why mosquitoes swam at sunset, not sunrise Why the praying mantis creates looks of surprise Why do birds fly thru the heavens with ease As they live another day, they rise into the breeze Why are the clouds white and the earth brown Why summer causes a smile while winter a frown Why spiders create a house as web of tapestry spun While the turtle carries its house, ever on the run Why do squirrels gather nuts for the winter harsh Why do frogs croak the night long in a misty marsh Why are oranges orange, limes green, lemons yellow Why is the winter so harsh, while the summer mellow Why does the firefly carry a lantern to illuminate night Why do butterflies spread stained-glass wings in flight Questions in nature seeking answers to be found galore As wondering humans bow down their heads and adore - - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Sunday 11 February 2024

Another journey you've taken for us to think twice about ignoring such marvels, yet such simple answers. Nicely done, rousing interest and intrigue with Mother Nature that in today's world is not an easy feat

Aristotle had all the answers. He proposed that the earth was on the back of a giant tortoise with all of the heavens spread overhead.

Thankfully, we have science that has answered all of those questions that most children learn in grade school. But one thing is certain, the more we know about nature, the less we know. Every time we look deeper, we find more. And often, contradictions to what we formally believed.

Why, when I bow down, it's only to get a closer look at some natural phenomena that requires a closer look so as not to get its purpose wrong.

Wow, John! I woke up to this stunning poetry just as the 6:25a.m. birds started to sing. This is now my favorite of your writings. The reason being the amount of appreciation and observation, contemplation, recreation == as in �re�creation that you have packed so lovingly into these couplets. May favorite among the favorites is: �More we know not than the little we knew�. That is so utterly profound, John. If I were young and wanting a Shakespeare-like tattoo, this would be the one; for what distinguishes us from other life forms is our fishing net of curiosities we cast, about �reasons� for things. This poem nets a robust school of observances, along with that stark and graceful way of seeing stained-glass butterfly wings. You have a tender symphony of a mind, so write on John. ~~ djl
