-- What We Believe --

by John Herlihy

What we conceive,

A seed grown.

What we believe,

A thread sewn.

What we deceive,

A deceit known.

What we grieve,

We suffer alone.

When we let go,

We fall into despair.

When we know,

We fall into prayer.

When we don’t know,

We simply stare.

When we glow,

We feel aware.

I know what I seek,

Always hoping to find.

I stand by my belief,

With its feeling kind.

Time flies week by week,

Questions on my mind.

Into the unknown I peek,

Even though I feel blind.

WHAT ONE BELIEVES MUST BE BASED ON TRUE FACTS...SOLID, LEADING ONE TO A...PEACEFUL AND PURPOSEFUL EXISTENCE. IF WHAT WE BELIEVE NEVER FINDS A CREST BUT CONTINUOUSLY SENDS US ON A QUEST TO FIND...THAT WHICH WE CAN'T EVEN DEFINE, THEN...'WHAT WE BELIEVE' CANNOT BE BELIEVED. YES? WONDERFUL STYLE, JOHN, ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Well this is purely profound, John. Wonder your setting, your moment that brought this writing to you. It’s a little journey in and of itself. Sparks of truth fire out from here, as well as spaces of peacefulness. I like “When we don’t know,/We simply stare.”. And a great last two lines — a ringing sound with that last line, “Even though I feel blind.” I enjoyed this poem. ~~ djl

This is an eloquent expression of the many kinds of desires and rewards and disappointments. Your first stanza is a mantra of wisdom. What we conceive,

A seed grown.

What we believe,

A thread sewn.

What we deceive,

A deceit known.

What we grieve,

We suffer alone.
