-- Passport to Freedom --
by John Herlihy
A passport to freedom found in a most unlikely place,
The freedom to think, to imagine, to find amazing grace.
In many cases, we are by our own mind innerly bound,
All tied up in knots with very little freedom to be found.
As birds in cages, we wonder how to escape from jail,
To allow all the misty winds of freedom to fill our sail.
Our dreams come to us easily but who says: I am free,
To know individual uniqueness to allow me to be me.
The stars shine all night, then plunge back into mystery,
The night gives way to the day in the circle of eternity.
We struggle to be free from the confines of our chain,
Without a struggle for freedom, forever bound remain.
How to soar like an eagle when we behave as a slave,
Breathe deeply, break those inner bonds and be brave.
