-- The Tree of Life -- by John Herlihy We tend to forget the past The past should not be forgotten Memories linger but do not last A rosebud blooms then will rotten Starlit visions in the night sky As a dream not to wake up from A mystery that only asks why The answer as blessing begotten The poem seeks to tell the truth Adverse, incapable, of telling a lie Truth ageless, yet glowing with youth With our soul instincts we comply The future stands on roots of the past The tree of life one question asked - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Tuesday 17 September 2024

Your last words here draw everything together, as yes, the tree of life has its future standing on the roots of the past. I often think of trees as alive in more ways than one. In my home office, I can peer out the window at the forest adjacent to the property and gaze at the way wind patterns give voice to the branches and leaves... all the result of the tree life living out a period of existence offering reminders that like the tree of life, it too is incapable of telling a lie... truth ageless. Ah, yes.
