-- Twilight’s Lantern --

John Herlihy

The twilight lantern dimming by the second,

On the flames of its heart nobody reckoned.

One final burst of its glowing autumnal hue,

The reds, yellows and oranges into sky flew.

Radiant mystical light briefly born only to die,

The horizon endeavors to utter a whispered sigh.

Time seems to stand still in awe of the mystery,

In the day’s conquest echoes the hush of eternity.

The blood-filled battle spills over horizon’s edge,

As if the day itself is making one last final pledge.

To return once again on the morrow, an act of will,

The twilight’s burning embers quietly smolder still.

The lantern’s dim light now vanished in one final gasp,

Twilight’s miracle fills us with wonder, but doesn’t last.

The light gone, noting left but darkness at earth’s hem,

Twilight, like a flash of lightning, had finally said amen.

The "twilight" bids adieu and curtseys as evening approaches to show off the light show of stars and the moon. I enjoyed this poem very much, John!!

Love ya!

Reading filled by mind with many sunsets I've seen. You captured the process beautifully as usual in a rather lyrical and haunting way.

We're all succumbing, John. As long as we can stay clear-sighted, and unpolluted by alcohol and drugs, hopefully we can remain ahead of the curve. Perhaps, one of life's biggest tragedies, is that too many get old too soon, and wise too late. It's been said that 'Anyone who retains and nurtures their ability to see beauty never grows old.' And though this is somewhat of an idealism, it is still an idea with some wisdom in it worth contemplating. Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed. Peace... rlc

Prefect rhyme as always and a thought provoking message about the short duration of the light. Wonderfully penned, John.

John, some of your recent poems are colored in melancholy. That is the reality of life. The Sufi in you seems getting over you. These poems provided some solace to the inner self. Thanks, John and stay blessed.
Warm regards,
Rashid
