Time Passing
John Herlihy
We think childhood will last forever,
But it passes in the fraction of a second.
We think boyhood will last forever,
But it passes quicker than anyone reckoned.
We think mature middle age will last forever,
Until we awaken to realize maturity is gone.
We think our elderly years will last forever,
Only to note the day’s curtains now drawn.
We think our lives will go on forever,
So precious and unique we think they are.
Then we realize that we are not so clever,
We will die, turn to dust, at night, a star.
Perhaps we think too much, let us imagine,
Mysteries lie in wait we will never fathom.
