The Mystery of Loving Another

by John Herlihy

Who can fathom the mystery of loving another,

Mystery that reveals itself as some rarity other.

I see this beautiful body surrounded by a glow,

The face, the smile, the lips crowned with halo.

A vision of beatitude that no one else can see,

No one else can fathom this lure of mystery.

My own reaction as growing surge of wonder,

My heart beating so wildly it feels as thunder.

My whole sense of self suddenly stripped away,

I bow down to this vision hoping that it will stay.

Love, what is love, a feeling captured in a word,

The sweetness, longing, song of an ancient bird.

You step tentatively forward, extend your hand,

I place my hand in yours, an abiding signal grand.

My heart doth sing but in my mind I simply weep,

Never did I think such an intense love to meet.

LOVE...! IT'S BURNING EMBERS COME FROM ABOVE...WITH FEELINGS WE'VE YET TO COMPLETELY COMPREHEND. ALL WE KNOW IS...THANK GOD FOR ITS GLOW! FOR WHETHER IN JOY OR SORROW NO HEART CAN EVER DENY, '...BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOSS THAN TO NEVER HAVE LOVED AT ALL...! THANK YOU, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Expressed with such emotion matching the smoldering rose in the image. I don't believe that I've experienced that kind of intense love. Only in my earlier years and those infatuations fell away quickly into ashes. It is only recently that I have experienced the love of another that is so intense that she will never let go. Something I can't return except by promise.

Yes, the flesh and blood version of love you speak of does exist, but it is the fortunate few who can recognize it, respect it, perhaps care for it, and find many years of repeat passion. For others, such emotional experience may be with many examples of Nature... your beautiful rose as an example. Thanks for posting, John. Any and all can take away some moments of your well-poeticized notion of love.
