One Last Poem

by John Herlihy

One more poem and then I will take leave,

Some brief final verses of what I still believe.

The mind pours forth what the heart inspires,

Sentiments that still burn as smoldering fires.

Writing the only dream that ever came true ,

The one fulfilling experience that I fully knew.

Breadcrumbs of poems that never grow stale,

Little twinkling stars of night that never pale.

A young child’s poem that will never grow old,

An old man’s poem ever fresh, forever young.

Poem of the heart scripted by feathered quill,

A final miracle to occur, some inspiration still.

Every poem potentially as the one poem last,

That one poem completed that will hold fast.

DEAR JOHN...I NOW SOMEWHAT UNDERSTAND AND CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE EXTENT OF YOUR DEDICATED DEVOTION TO YOUR 'CALLING'. FROM IT WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO ENJOY MARVELOUSLY INSPIRING POETRY, INDEED. YOU GIVE YOUR VERY BEST WITH EACH WRITING AS IF IT WERE YOUR LAST AND IT IS FELT MY FRIEND AND TREASURED. SO, THOUGH AT TIMES I DON'T AGREE WITH SOME OF IT...I THANK GOD FOR YOU AND COUNTLESS TIMES THAT 'HE' HAS CERTAINLY GIVEN ME A SENSE OF 'HIS' PEACE, THROUGH YOU . PRESS-ON, AMEN! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

For poets like you, there is no last poem. Only a pause, a breath, where adjustment might need some room to stretch. You've created many a line throughout your poetic history that serves well to convey the unexpected idea, epiphany, or the grounding of a long-awaited need to be expressed. Well written, John. Thank you.

I suppose the last of anything (poems included) could hold a special place in the world of poetry, for the most part because it offers a glimpse into the thoughts and emotions of the Poet as they face their own mortality. The beauty of the last of anything, as far as I'm concerned, is that it is also the beginning of something else. A somber but hopeful poem John, well taken. Peace...

You are not leaving us. Instead, you are suggesting that you will write poetry up until the last one before you leave us like all of us will, eventually.

Might I suggest…

An old man’s poem ever fresh, forever [bold].
