Whether Our Memories Live or Die by John Herlihy Whether our memories live or die Once they existed with reasons to live No further need then to fret or cry Once upon a time, they existed to give Does the turgid river remember its birth Does the flower know it comes from earth Questions that memory cannot answer Lost in the mind, stalked by a panther Do warm waters remember being frozen Do forget-me-nots remember they be chosen We remember not but the memory still there Whispering sweet nothings as sincere prayer If the memories still live, I will live with them If memories forgotten, I still live without them - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Monday 24 November 2025

Some good questions. It seems like to lose one's memory is perhaps the worst�dementia. But what we remember, generally, is what impressed our brain the most. The more shocking, the event, the more likely it is to be remembered.

But if the event involves head trauma, damage to the brain. The event may not be remembered at all, or come back very slowly overtime as the brain heals.

Of late I've been whelmed with memories of past relationships that I haven't remembered for decades. This happens more and more now when I wake up between 1-3am. Holy Writ calls this time the 3rd Watch. Seems every memory has some kind of a conflict associated with it that was left unresolved. It's like all the storage closets in me are being cleaned out and put in order. And every time I pray and ask forgiveness for those dissonant past circumstances, my mind gets a little less saddled. The process is yielding fruit. Enjoyed the message in this John. Thanks. r

Yes, memoriies leave one with yesterdays still available, whether during the day or during one'd nocturnal dreams... until they're not. I often wonder if we purposely delete some memories, or are they just a random synaptic frenzy that goes north?
