 I Care

by John Herlihy

Early on
I never did care
As time passed
I began to care
Then eventually
I cared very much

Then a day arrived
I cared much less
Last week
Who cares
Yesterday
I don’t care

One day
I won’t care
When the days end
I could care less
Days thereafter
I need not care

Today
I care
Tomorrow
I will still care
For the future
I will always care

 Reviews of "I Care"

The poem posits a plus and minus see saw of caring and not caring, arriving at the emotion's resolution: your focus seems to be that your caring periods are geared to finally focus on the future... and I believe what we do, what purpose we find to care about has a good shot at making the future. After all, if enough of us fall into lockstep with you, what a change the future could appreciate.

'I Care" traces the fluctuating nature of human concern over time. It shares a sequence of statements showing how the writers level of caring is fluid and changes from moment to moment, day to day, and across the life he's lived thus far. "I Care" is also (IMO) a meditation on self-definition, showing that the poet can choose, and shift between detachment and engagement, and that both are part of a full and authentic life. Thank you for sharing. Peace. r
