Another Bad One, Last Night

“Quiet minds can’t be perplexed or frightened,

But go on, in fortune or misfortune,

At their own private pace,

Like a clock, during a thunderstorm.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

A quiet evening at home,

Relaxing with my family;

Then, Emergency Beacons:

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!

“Very Severe Thunderstorms,

Are Now Heading Your Way;

Everyone Should Take Cover,

Right Now, Without Delay.”

I looked at my wife,

And she looked at me;

Without saying one word,

We knew how it had to be.

I started herding dogs,

She started grabbing cats;

Within a matter of seconds,

In our basement, we all sat.

We heard a terrifying boom,

And all our power went out;

This would be a real bad one,

Of this, we now had no doubt.

The wind, it began a howlin,

Like an old banshee from hell;

The lightning, was now relentless,

And loud, echoing, thunder, as well.

Time now seemed to be suspended,

There appeared to be no end in sight;

On and on and on, this storm raged,

For hours, on and on, into our night.

When this storm’s fury was finally over,

Outside, things were now horridly a mess;

But the only casualties – some tomato plants,

All in all, I’d have to say we were truly blessed.

But it seems that old Mother Nature,

Is in a very wicked mood, these days;

And I have a feeling many more storms,

For every one of us, are now on the way.

I'd rather know I am inside my house when we are having any kind of a storm as I very well know the job mother Nature can do on our surroundings, thank you for sharing ed.

Wow, God has surely blessed all of you. These storms the past few years seem to be gaining in intensity and I shudder when I hear one is approaching, no where to run, no where to hide. Bless you all for coming out of this one in one piece....

Be always safe,
Karen

So glad both of you and all the critters are safe. You brought the storm alive in your poem Ed.

Glad you made it through the storms; stay safe, hear?? Excellent write of nature's fury!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :)

Try living HERE in TEXAS--with NO basements! (Can I come live in yours?? Karla, too??)

We only had heat lightening the past days. Nothing bad like you discuss here. The photo is threatening and scary. Glad you are safe and sound and all the family survived through it even the pets.

I wish a bit a lightening would strike some fear into the hearts of some politicians, especially those, that seem to be hiding in their bunkers, seeing neither weather, nor reality.
Bless you friend, may most of your days be blessed with sunshine instead.

You ought to see one of these storms on the Ocean, if you haven't, you have missed an awesome show. Nice write.

Here, in Milan, because of the hot temperatres and high humidity, it's not uncommon to have a thunder storm every night or at least every other in the summer. They often last for hours and are violent...but when they pass, the next morning...it's beautiful...hot and sunny once again!

I love t-storms, especially at the beach & walking in the ocean and the lightening hits the water and through your feet you feel this faint buzz...but in the camper it can be kinda scary especially for Rufuz, & sometimes me when the wind whips and the camper, all 20,000 pounds of her, starts to move...;) Ed

Ed,

The StormSpinner didn't do it. You're right: the storms are getting bigger and badder. And so is the heat: 105 yesterday, 107 over the weekend. The patterns, they are a-changing...God have mercy! Glad you had a basement to shelter in (LUCKY YOU!) and not too much damage occured: could have been worse. You could be in Texas with NO basements! LOL

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

An excellent recounting of the storm, and love the song - perfect accompanyment!
