Part One Of My Recent Journey West

“In order to really enjoy a dog,

One doesn't try to train him to be semi-human;

The point of it is, to open oneself up,

To the possibility, of becoming, partly a dog.”

Edward Hoagland

Music: Ramblin Man

I really love my lovely spouse

And I really care for all our cats

But when I wanna go a wanderin

Gimme a dog, no doubt about that

Dogs don’t care if we’re travelin only one block

Or now headin a thousand miles down the road

They never ever complain, about anything I do

And a wanderin with them, never ever, gets old

They could care less, when we get ourselves lost

Or, if we’ll be a travelin all day, on into the night

They don’t demand pricey hotels or fancy restrooms

No matter where we go, it still fills them with delight

They could care less, if we just sleep in my old truck

Or in a tent, or on a nice warm night, out under the stars

They don’t care, if we dine like gourmets or slurp burritos

They don’t even mind if I have myself a little drink at a bar

They don’t mind, sittin around with me, on a hillside

Or walkin with me in the woods, on a warm, sunny day

They don’t freak out, if we skinny dip in a lake or a pond

In fact, most anything we do, to them, is most perfectly OK

And, I guess, that I’m a lot like my faithful old canines

The simplest things, still fill both me and them, with awe

We all wonder what’s down the road, and around that bend

And we’re all absolutely thrilled by a little bird’s song at dawn

This trip, me and my mutts,

Were now headin out west;

To several intriguing places,

That filled all of us with zest.

I really love my lovely spouse,

And I really care for all our cats;

But when I wanna go a wanderin,

Gimme a dog, no doubt about that.

You've touched this dog lover's heart Ed. I love every line in your wonderful poem. Life without a dog isn't a life, it's merely an existance. Thank you for the read.

Jersey Devil Ed said to me when you were gone that if he should given the choice he would come back as your dog, although he draw the line about you giving him a bath.
Ole me? I love dogs, you ain't gonna get arguments from me.
Now what you will do about Rufuz? that mutt's spoiled.

PEEWEE - AAH -"On the road again ...'

I can almost hear Little Willy Nelson's twangy voice & guitar!

i have a TEE shirt with "10 Reasons why a Beer is better than a Woman" -
your poem exemplifies that same concept - must be the Martian thing in us.

R&R - a good Mutt - and No Worries, Mate -

glad you guys had a good time - look forward to next installment.

"I love to go a-wandering, along the mountain track,
and as I go, I love to sing, with my knapsack on my back,
Bella-ree - Bella-rah - Bella-ree - Bella-rah -
with my knapsack on my back ... "

Now tell the truth - when you're out there - do you guys all YODEL ???

Howl at the moon? WHIZZ on the trees? F-A-R-T !!!

Man - Dog - Nature ... at their BEST ...

Tom.
