Often, on our meanderings, in old New Mexico
We will visit, once again, these Apache Woods
Now called Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge
Both my spouse and I, when here, feel very good
The very ancient Pueblo peoples resided here, for centuries
Her own ancestors, the Apaches, loved to set up camp here
El Camino Real (The Royal Road from Mexico to Santa Fe)
Ran directly through these woods, for so many countless years
Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge is a crucial winter haven
For many types of birds, including Geese and Sandhill Cranes
They spend the winter months here, in its life-giving wet lands
Then head north in the spring, to Idaho’s summer breeding plains
Today, this truly magnificent 58,000 acre bird and wildlife refuge
Is the home of birds, mule deer, coyotes, porcupines, and muskrats
My spouse and I have been very fortunate to see many of its residents
And each time we leave old Apache Woods, we hope that we’ll be back
We both love to wander the Southwest,
And, the enchanting state of New Mexico;
We never run out of captivating, historic spots,
There are truly so many magnificent places, to go.
