Our Oil-Suffocated Gulf Coast

Is Not The Only Place In America

Under Attack, These Dreadful Days

“It is horrifying

That we have to fight

Our own Government

(And Big Business)

To protect our environment,

And it’s many treasures.”

Ansel Adams

It is a place, of awe-inspiring beauty

Revered, by ancient Native Americans

It is a place, I first visited, many years ago

It is a place, I hope to visit one day, yet again

It is a place, where the Ancient Spirits still dwell

It is a place, first explored, by John Wesley Powell

It is a place, often used as a hideout, by Butch Cassidy

It is a place, where one can still hear, Wise Coyote howl

It is a place, guarding many 1,000 year-old rock paintings

It is a place, where a wild old river still flows, out in Utah

It is a place, very appropriately named ‘Desolation Canyon’

It is a place, that will always fill someone like me, with awe

It is a place, which should be protected by national law

So that it can be enjoyed, by future generations to come

In 1969, it was designated a National Historic Landmark

But by our leaders, and big business, it was nearly undone

It is a place, our present leaders, had horridly decided to forsake

Quickly persuaded by powerful lobbyists, to drill for gas and oil

In our modern world, we continue to decimate national treasures

Ancient history and natural wonders, wiped out for greedy spoils

It has very sadly taken numerous years of endless lawsuits and negotiations

For conservation and wilderness groups to once again, safeguard this land

Unless every American citizen now starts demanding we protect the past

More and more of our national treasures will be destroyed, by modern man

My native blood must agree.
Its like building a family tree.
Wipe out the roots
And the tree falls too.

It is amazing the legal extent to which big business and the Fed will go. Donations meant for good are sucked into the legal vacuum cleaners lawyers pocket of both sides. Common sense could do so much good here. Patrick

Desecration of such places to lose forever just for the fast buck is insanity. We lose so much of the bronze age, iron age, prehistoric, roman and saxon age. on a creed of greed.

In south dakota i spoke to many indians who had lost continuity with their past. At least oil is fossil and will return, but bricks and mortar and tarmac will be the legacy ripping the guts out of cultures of long past.

...and it will disappear, Ed, disappear, if greed and indifference have their way ...and they usually do.

It really is such a sad state of affairs when no help is offered to protect those areas around the country that are sacred ground to many. Now even our government is on the greed wagon and there does not seem to be any end in sight..

Be always safe,
Karen

As usual Ed, you are right on the money & timing with this write, as I just read somewhere of a Desolation canyon being marked for some kind of drilling...I don't know for what, but I can only imagine...ed

It is sad. We tear down natural beauty to build shopping malls.
Let's remember those beautiful landmarks.
God bless

The music you put with this poem, really drives your point across. I have heard of this landmark many times before..I too, would love to go visit there one day...I believe that mankind is on a path of destruction, however, I also believe that life will survive but not as we know it at this moment.

Peace, love and light,

The destruction of our future at the cost of the destruction of our past makes absolutely no sense to me. It burns my spirit! Thanks for a good write Ed.

Sounds like a heavenly place to visit! I can almost feel the spirits of the ones who dwell there. Nature is so very beautiful!
