“Faith is the bird that feels the light,
When the dawn is still dark.”
Rabindranath Tagore
I look for them, every morning now
As they both perch there, in the snow
If they can brave another winter’s day
I wonder why, we humans complain so
They arrived here, long before the arctic wind did
They don’t fly off to a warm, sun-drenched, place
As I brew a pot of coffee, and observe them there
I count my blessings; they bring a smile to my face
They reside out there, in the harsh elements, together
They have no heated enclosure, to escape frigid storms
They are completely content, being out there, together
How so different from us; how so simple, is their ‘norm’
Unlike most of my human neighbors, who rant and rave
Who complain about shoveling, and about their heating bills
They simply cuddle there together, singing their morning song
By the sight of another sunrise, and a few seeds, they are thrilled
They quickly inspire me to get dressed, and to head out with my dogs
They so sagely remind me, that there are so many, less fortunate than I
As I fill the bird feeder and feed the squirrels, I thank them for the lesson
They sing ‘you’re welcome,’ as they greet the dawn, and soar into the sky
I look for them, every morning now,
As they both perch there, in the snow;
If they can brave another winter’s day,
I wonder why, we humans complain so.

My Forsythia tree just outside my lounge window brings in such entertainment from these brave and content and resourceful little creatures...
Diana...
winter days in Ireland when robins and blackbirds
and thrushes huddled together for warmth while sleet
and snow came down, and the little pieces of bread
they were suspicious of but took eventually.
How lovely your poem is!

Wow you really get the quotes and by an Indian poet/musician no less. How do you do that.. and I shall have to rekindle my faith, it has grown murky lately...

I often wonder how animals like birds brave the bitter cold or heat,
but it doesn't seem to both them. And yes, we complain too much. Love the picture.

I think so.
