“Hold fast to dreams,
For when dreams go,
Life is a barren landscape,
Frozen with snow.”

Langston Hughes

I’m already out and about this frigid dawn
I eventually stop to gaze at the frozen lake
Most people, still snug and warm indoors
On this sub-zero morning, still not awake

As I stand here, gazing out at all of the ice
I recall many a pleasant stroll here, in spring
This is one sub-zero winter, I wish would end
Far too much suffering, this one continues to bring

Homeless people, hovering under blankets in alleys
Homeless dogs, some barely alive, out on the streets
I was on my way to try and rescue a dog at a cemetery
In the bushes, in Forty Below, this forgotten orphan sleeps

My dreams, this cruel Forty Below Winter, also seem to be frozen now
I’ve been dreaming about that frozen, lifeless, dog, on the railroad tracks
That’s when I get a call prohibiting me from entering the gated cemetery
“We don’t care about some damned dog! And you had better not trespass.”

-Life right now truly is a barren, frozen, extremely cruel and apathetic landscape-

There is no crueler or more selfish animal than man. Such a sad story. I hope vou have more happy endings than ones like this.

Being homeless is bad enough for anyone. Being frozen without shelter in this day in time is inexcusable.

That cemetery is sacred. It's a place where the dead should not be desecrated by some fool tramping around in the snow looking for some "damned dog."

What a callous, stupid attitude. I'd sic animal control on him for bad behavior! Better yet, call the chairman of the cemetery board and report the bastard. If that gets no results, call up the local TV station hungry for more winter horror stories, and clue a reporter in.

Those people are not human ...and therefore I do not expect them to have heart. It is a sad fact that the 'human' race becomes less and less 'humane' as time goes on.

Where there's a will there is a way.

How painful it continues to be for your work to be fulfilled. Man's inhumanity to man and beast is reaching pandemic proportions, even with the borders of warless countries. And then, we've got a different kind, even more subtler than most, as I tried to depict in "Froth."

Yes Ed I can understand the issues, I always wonder why should we live in places with extreme climate. We cannot escape, be it the heat or the cold, I am never a fan. Here in mumbai where I live we have moderate climate throughout the year and I am used to this for the last thirty years, then it becomes difficult to see the problems of others who suffer extreme weather conditions on top of other issues. -roseline
