Valley Of Screams

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Bits from a dream I had last night, but far less graphic than the actual dream...for it seemed so real.

Valley Of Screams

I of midnight dreams,

awoke to the horror of painful screams.

as in transient spirit, I bore

a silent witness,

to a queer and unusual scene.

For there before me were multitudes of dying

With mouths agape, and last breath's escape…

Making an earnest and final plea

amidst mournful spirits sighing.

I stood now in helpless awe

As I watched, one thousand men fall.

I wondered aloud

as to what force that had brought me to this place.

For on the horizon, in far away east,

I saw millions upon millions

On both horse and on foot,

Marching…marching, but not for peace,

but for the final war.

For the Tigress and Euphrates…

They were no more,

As the soldiers from the east

marched on dry land,

destroying all… from shore to shore.

Battalion after battalion,

To this mass would fall,

As blood soon reached

Babylon's wall.

For there was sand and blood,

And children dying,

With screams from hell,

And world leaders crying.

Peace…peace, was their plea,

As the million man army from the east

Spread like an uncontrollable disease…

That was…

until they reached Megiddo.

At this point, I awoke in my bed,

My eyes filled with smoke,

And tears streaming down my face.

However, nothing was burning,

nothing, but my heart.

I am truly glad I did not read this just before laying head to pillow. I know I would have nightmares. A powerfully penned piece. My congratulatons to you for composing something so visually impactful. This might be disturbing but it is only so because you are so effective.

Yes, Lori's words are exactly what came to mind as I read the poem. "J should stop reading Revelations and Daniel so close to bedtime." LOL But I did enjoy the poem. Spooky stuff first thing in the morning and certainly will 'cause some to wonder what's afoot.

Sounds like too much late night bible reading... at least certain portions. Excellent write. Enjoyed.
