Simple Little Pretty Things

Solitaire stood the glass clown, next to the crystal carousel.

On a shelf filled with tiny what-nots

that you always loved so very well.

Simple little pretty things,

All placed with care, and filled with dreams.

Like your delicate paintings on the wall,

which for some reason, always hung askew.

Then there are the photographs of all the children

taken with Kodak's, Cannons, and Minoltas too.

From times when they were little,

until they finished school.

Oh how strong our memories cling

to such treasured and inanimate things.

Yet time and age has brought unto me this sad chill,

As I ponder and scrutinize the listings

Of who gets  this and who gets that on our final will.

Yet this I must ask…

who is worthy of your tiny glass clown

The one that made you smile amidst tears

In spite of its cold and bitter frown.

Who to shall all this we leave?

For I am burdened with question,

And confounded by hesitation.

For I wonder still….

Shall the benefactor of this glass clown

With its sad little face…will they love it….

Will they love it as you have loved them?

Or will they discard it without ever

realizing what it is truly worth.

Or will they treasure it as you have

after all these wonderful years together on this earth.

It is of these things… it is of this will,

It is of the treasures of our simple life,

It is of the happiness that our love has fulfilled.

So pray tell…how can I leave all this that you love so best,

To another that shall merely regard it as Mom and Pops mess.

I swear, I think, I would rather see it all melt into a fiery sky

the very moment in time that we bid this world good-bye.

a beautiful poem on such a sad topic
this is delicate, and very difficult
maybe you should ask them , who wants what just an ideal
or buy a special case a give it as a gift
(if my death isn't a (too much of surprise) i plan to gave myself a going away party)
that is where the gift ideal came from

This is wonderful and really does make you almost regretful as no one can really appreciate the simple things as those to whom they belong. knowing which one who knows the feelings of the clown will appreciate and respect it. Very difficult things to think about. Very nicely written as always.

as you know, love is eternal ... things have sentimental value and represent stages of our lives that remind us of times gone by ... they revive the happiness within our lives ... our hearts and souls keep alive the memories ... things only contain their shell ...

extremely well written ... the emotional quality of this poem is very moving ... the images brought us into your state of mind and the intensity of your convictions ...

i wonder about my collection of costume jewelry brooches and my porcelain dolls...which one of the grandkids will appreciate them and which will see them as something to get rid of...i enjoyed reading this, especially since the same thing has been on my mind lately

Your writing is filled with such raw beauty. So much pain written with a powerful hand. My children don't want the beautiful antique furniture. They want Pottery Barn. So I'm giving things to my young cousins who appreciate them. To heck with my boys.

Maybe to have your things cremated with you, or sold before death and with the money make a new happy memory on Tibee...? Ed

I agree with Eileen and sometimes it is hard to go to an auction sale and you wonder about the treasures of another person. I try to get a feel for what they are like.

oh how poignant and rife with strife Allen. The time that comes when we must decide these things is pregnant with pain. Perhaps it is why we should live without them, but few do. I think your last two lines would be my summation too;-)
