Eyes From ICU

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

day five in the ICU ward where my Leah clings to one of the most precious gifts that God ever gave man and that is life. 23 out of 24 hours each day I call this home leaving only long enough to go home and change clothes and feed the cat. The remaining hours are filled with meeting of doctors pastors and shrinks. After 9pm I along with other grieving souls are banished to the waiting room for an all night stay on a hard chair or cold floor. I know not sleep for it is a stranger and comfort has stolen away in the night.

I shudder through the night alone as my dear Leah clings to each breath. I have long since sent home the remainder of family as I see to no purpose that their lives be stolen from one another in the great game of waiting. Man offers no hope and have on many occasions suggested the end. However as there is my love; there is hope and my hope remains in that this by God shall be overcome. The sadness for me is all consuming yet as I look around in the waiting room where a sprinkling of grieving families remain; I see a common bond in the eyes of strangers; I see the unfathomable sadness in their eyes that I too see in mine.

 Eyes From ICU

I look into their eyes and I see the emptiness of a defeated soul; I see myself.
Eyes turned dark rimmed in a tear driven bloodshot red.
I see a middle aged man and woman sobbing as they cry themselves to sleep.
I see wounds of broken hearts scored by pain too deep.
I long to lend comfort to these most sorrowful souls.
Yet when I searched for my comfort to give, I found it had gone.
One AM and most left here are now asleep.
I walk outside and find the window to my wife's room...
I kneel in the warm darkness beneath the full moon.
I pray; I weep; I ask God to meet our every need.

such painful beauty in your words as you find sympathy for like souls as well as wrapping yourself in your faith--and mostly, the beauty in your love for precious Leah

Dear Allen, If there ever is a time of testing, it is now. Be strong...for Leah NEEDS your strength; be brave, for Leah NEEDS to know you're still her Knight in shining armour; pour out your love, for Leah NEEDS to feel the warmth of your embrace. Look up, take the hand that Jesus extends...you will receive strength; look into His eyes, you will gain courage; open your heart, God's abiding love will overflow. Most importantly, Allen, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding..." Proverbs 3:5.
Releasing you and Leah to the Lord in prayer.

God Bless
Lena J.

Dear Allen, I decided to check in on AD today to see if you had something posted so that I could find out how things were going with you & Leah & I saw this. I sank down into my chair and prayed for God to be with you and Leah, granting both of you strength and peace. Here's a few verses that may help you, I sure hope so:

Psalm 55:22 "Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."

Matthew 24:13 "He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved."

Micah 7:8 "When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me."

Psalm 46:1 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Allen, I hope these verses will bring some sort of peace to your mind. I'm still looking & praying for a miracle. Please try to eat & drink something so that you won't become dehydrated and sick. My mind & heart is with the two of you and my prayers are mumbled throughout the day. If there is anything I can do, let me know. Allen, let God's light warm your soul and feed your body, giving you strength to take those needed steps forwarded each day. May God's richest blessing be with you both.

Your names are added to the prayer list at church, I hope we are all doing the same. I know we are praying and believing in the power of God to have His way in your lives. Be careful not to become feeble J. Love is in the name of Jesus.

Dear Allen and Leah, I am lifting you in prayer. God is there. He feels your pain and fear and holds you in His loving arms. Lean on Him, for His love is greater than all your suffering.
"Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast. ..... even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You."
Keep looking to Him, even through your tears; He will light your path and guide you.

Love, Connie

It helps to know that you aren't in this alone, J. Allen; I wish I knew what to say/do to comfort your hurting, grieving heart. I went up to the altar this morning at church, had prayer specifically for you and Leah. I hope you felt the prayers coming y'all's way. I will continue to pray for you and Leah now and in the days ahead. God be with you during this difficult, uncertain time in your lives~

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

My prayers and thoughts are with you both. Please try to make sure you drink water, and something to eat a few times a day..You will need your strength now. You will make it through this time, and Leah has been so blessed to have such a wonderful and caring man in her life. She has no regrets, and she knows you have and will always love her.
I send peace, love, and white soothing energy to both of you,
Amber "V"

(((Allen)))

I know the fear, the uncertainty, the not knowing what the next hour will bring - spent a week on those hard chairs, when Karen was in ICU. Please stay strong, know you are being lifted in prayer, not only by Karen and I, but by our church, many of our friends ... we love you, if you need anything, please let me know!

(((((HUGS))))) and love, Karla.
