The Old Church along the way

Poem Artwork
The day carried with it a chill as the old back roads I did roam.
Past the fields of neglected cotton; past the present past of home.
Moss draped trees lined the memories that moved me this way.
I stopped at an old church and fell to my knees to quietly pray.

Every turn; every move shared the smile of one so dear.
And now having arrived at my destination, I walk in fear.
Afraid to let go of all that I so dearly love and know.
Fearful am I that my heart will wax hard and bitterly cold.

I rise in the morn and walk to a different church only one block away.
And here too I will upon bended knee to the Lord humbly pray.
I need to let go, I need to get a life...I need so much but all I want is my wife.

Yet I know this is not to ever again be.
For come Monday our love will sail upon the sea.
Oh but should I sink or swim for all things grow weary in time.

"Bless the Lord oh my soul; bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord oh my soul and forget not His benefits.
Who healeth all thy iniquities..."

Bless me Lord this day...

I have served as pastor of so many churches like you write about. Thanks for putting such deep emotions with it.

(((Allen))),

My heart breaks for you, reading these honest lines, of wanting to let go, but afraid of what it means ... the finality of it ... you won't forget, my friend. You are not alone; you have God, you have us ... beautifully penned sadness.

(((((HUGS))))) love and prayer, Karla.

Thank you, Allen, for taking us along with you on your journey. You will not be alone...even after you let go of your box of memories...we are here and the Lord is as well. The best part is...even after you let go of the memory box, you will still have those memories in your heart and eventually they will help you find peace and solace.
