Poem Artwork

The Old Man And The Swing

He sat in the double swing alone on a hot and humid Carolina night.

Summer had arrived with vengeance, and though it was almost midnight-

Sweat formed in small salty drops upon his time worn furrowed brow.

He was tired, but content; life had thrown at him all it could…

And it was still with a smile he somehow stood.

He thought on many things between the flicking of lightning bugs.

He could have surrendered long ago, but that was too easy.

He thought silently…No one ever said that life promised you a smile.

But he would go on, and he would win.

For he remembered, it is not what life deals you…

But how you think of yourself and overcome in the end.
