Travelers, Drifters, and Those Searching To Belong

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

While here in Florida I'm staying at one of those extended stay places; you know the ones that rent by the week. It was pretty nice and modern, although the beds were like jailhouse beds. Yet what made this most remarkable was sitting on what the called “the front porch” I would often step out onto “the front porch” just to escape the confines of my room. It was there that I would overhear those who resided here on a semi-permanent basis talk. There was the young father with two small children, no job, and who was happy he was able to cut trees for ten hours one day for 30.00 pay.

Then there was a young girl…maybe 21, or 22 who was as thin as a rail and talked about her methadone treatments. Then around six every evening, truck loads of day laborers would pile in hardly able to drag one foot behind the other, muddy head to toe and exhausted from the days work. I discovered by listening and watching, those these were basically good people who have hit a very hard spot in the road. I then wondered how judgmental others are of these folks…I admit shamefully that for a moment I was. Yet, if we but listen, we all have a story to tell, and I listened, and I am glad I got to know the travelers, the drifters, and those searching to belong.

Travelers, Drifters, and Those Searching To Belong

They roll in dragging a load of sorrows, hard times, and wondering of tomorrow.

Dressed in hip-hop, short skirts, and clothes that seem not to fit and borrowed.

They sit on the front porch every evening; they talk of hope and plan on future dreams.

They struggle; they fight and have sometimes tasted the worst that life can bring.

The young dad who lost his job, the young girl in recovery and now back in school.

To sit, to listen and in a surreal sense live with them their lives; gives tomorrow a new meaning.

So much is there to learn if one would but hear the shattered hopes and dreams.

We all have our pain; we all think that sometimes we have worst of all.

Yet if one would but spend a week on the front porch, one might hear their true call.

Therefore I am glad I have traveled this road, I am glad I sat on the front porch of dreams.

For life amongst the living…rich or poor aint always what it seems.

Powerfully penned lesson, Allen, if we get to know the person behind the appearance, the story, we might find a good friend, indeed! Well done, my friend.

(((HUGS))), love and continued prayer, Karla.
