Between The Oleander And The Palm

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The procedure with Jan was a success. No more bleeding on the brain, but she still remains in a great deal of pain. We are to leave in the morning for the return trip home. I hope and pray for traveling mercies. Below is a poem inspired by the view out my hotel window as well a picture from my window.

Between The Oleander And The Palm

I watch the soft summer rain dance upon the palms of this southern day.

The humidity squeezes the lungs as on oleander blossoms hummingbirds’ play.

Thunder rumbles in the distance; storm clouds rise above the sea.

I see an old black man on a bicycle pass my window carrying sugarcane.

Shadows of a peeping sun danced upon his furrowed time worn brow.

I watched him fade into the vegetation and then reappear somehow.

With the cane still strapped to his back, he turned and to my window he faced.

The look in his eyes was haunting as he starred at me and me at him.

The sun winked again and in full sunshine it began once more to rain.

He twinkled at me and with a crooked little smile peddled his bike away.

I watched in silent ponderous thought between oleanders, palms and the misting rain.

Who was this man who carried cane? What did he want, what was the message he was to bring?

Should I ponder more to this odd day? Yes, I think I shall as I will always will remember the old black man, the bicycle and the sugarcane.

Just read this poem a little late, but here's well wishing to you and yours. I loved those oleander bushes in Bermuda when I went with my deceased Tom in 1997 and even bought Oleander Perfume, which I wish I had some now.

SO GLAD TO HEAR THE WONDERFUL NEWS...NOW MORE PRAYER FOR THE COMPLETE
HEALING. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR WONDERING ABOUT THE SIGHTING...FOR WHEN THE SENSES HAVE BEEN PELTED WITH GREAT PAIN, IT REACHES OUT TO GATHER ENCOURAGEMENT AND STRENGTH FROM THE SIMPLEST OCCURRENCES IN OUR LIVES. THE OLD BLACK MAN ON A BIKE? PROBABLY JUST AN COINCIDENTAL THING, HOWEVER, IF ONE REALLY WANTED TO GET A 'MEANING' OUT OF THIS SIGHTING; IN THE ARMS OF ONE WHO ONCE, SYMBOLICALLY, ALSO
KNEW GREAT PAIN, REST THE 'SWEET TOKENS' OF WHAT LIES AHEAD. THANKS FOR SHARING, BLESSINGS AND LOVE TO YOU AND JAN.

It was great hearing your voice the other day. Thank you for calling! And so glad that Jan's angiogram was a success, but I pray her pain eases soon. That has got to be one miserable test! I will continue TO lift you and her up on my prayers! And I pray that you have a safe journey back home! Very well penned, and glad things went well! God is good!

(((HUGS))) and much love to you AND to Jan~

As always, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D X0X0X0X0X0X0
